有一天接孩子放学回家的路上,我和我的儿子Jason(2年级)和我女儿Jessie(学前班)一起聊天。

Jason:爸爸,今天我读了一本你买给我的书,我很喜欢,里面有一句我想分享给你:don’t follow your heart, because your heart can betray you and fool with you sometime.(不要跟随你的心,因为你的心可能会背叛和愚弄你)

Jessie:yes, Jason, that’s why we need and only can always follow God’s word, God will never betray and fool with us, because he loves us so much. And remember Jason, you need listen to dad and mom as well, because they love us, they want to protect us…like if they don’t want us running in the parking lot, that’s because they don’t want us get hit by the cars, and you will die.(对的,哥哥,这是为什么我们要随时听上帝的话,因为祂爱我们,祂绝对不会背叛和愚弄我们,然后,你要记得,也要听爸爸妈妈的话,因为他们也爱我们,他们想保护我们,比如,爸爸妈妈不让我们在停车场乱跑,是因为他们不想我们被车撞死。)

Jason: yes, I know that Jessie.(我知道。)

Jessie: you do? That’s good Jason!(你真的知道?

我儿子接着说:so, they only teach you the creation and creature but not the creator, right? So, if you didn’t know the creator, what’s the meaning of knowing the creation and creature?(所以,他们只教你受造物,但是却不会告诉你造物主,对吗?

儿子:爸爸,我这个绝对绝对比你厉害,你输定了,我今天刚刚在学校学的:my mom is faithful, grateful and godly…she is Faithful to God, and she always grateful for God, and she is a godly woman who loved by God and loves God.

❓Question 40: What should we pray?

The whole Word of God directs and inspires us in what we should pray, including the prayer Jesus himself taught us.

📖 Scripture: Ephesians 3:14–21

For this reason I bow my knees before the Father, from whom every family in heaven and on earth is named, that according to the riches of his glory he may grant you to be strengthened with power through his Spirit in your inner being, so that Christ may dwell in your hearts through faith—that you, being rooted and grounded in love, may have strength to comprehend with all the saints what is the breadth and length and height and depth, and to know the love of Christ that surpasses knowledge, that you may be filled with all the fullness of God. Now to him who is able to do far more abundantly than all that we ask or think, according to the power at work within us, to him be glory in the church and in Christ Jesus throughout all generations, forever and ever. Amen.

🙏 Prayer

God Who Hears, let your living Word shape our desires and our prayers. May it challenge us to pray for things that don’t seem possible. May it inform our view of you as we approach you as beloved sons and daughters. May it drive us to our knees as we recognize our need of you. Amen.

❓Question 39: With what attitude should we pray?

With love, perseverance, and gratefulness; in humble submission to God’s will, knowing that, for the sake of Christ, he always hears our prayers.

📖 Scripture: Philippians 4:6

Do not be anxious about anything, but in everything by prayer and supplication with thanksgiving let your requests be made known to God.

🙏 Prayer

Loving Father, we come to you in the name of your beloved Son. Give us perseverance in prayer, even when we do not immediately see answers. Let us believe that you will not keep back any good thing from us, and trust that you will withhold those things we seek that would harm us. Your ways are higher than our ways, and we entrust our requests to your sovereign kindness. Amen.

❓Question 38: What is prayer?

Prayer is pouring out our hearts to God in praise, petition, confession of sin, and thanksgiving.

📖 Scripture: Psalm 62:8

Trust in him at all times, O people; pour out your heart before him; God is a refuge for us.

❓Question 37: How does the Holy Spirit help us?

The Holy Spirit convicts us of our sin, comforts us, guides us, gives us spiritual gifts and the desire to obey God; and he enables us to pray and to understand God’s Word.

📖 Scripture: Ephesians 6:17–18

And take the helmet of salvation, and the sword of the Spirit, which is the word of God, praying at all times in the Spirit, with all prayer and supplication. To that end keep alert with all perseverance, making supplication for all the saints.

🙏 Prayer

God the Spirit, have your way in us. Shine your light on the secret sins of our hearts. Equip us for tasks that are too large for us. Make us glad in what delights you. Intercede for us and open our eyes to rightly understand the Word of truth. Amen.

❓Question 36: What do we believe about the Holy Spirit?

That he is God, coeternal with the Father and the Son, and that God grants him irrevocably to all who believe.

📖 Scripture: John 14:16-17

And I will ask the Father, and he will give you another Helper, to be with you forever, even the Spirit of truth, whom the world cannot receive, because it neither sees him nor knows him. You know him, for he dwells with you and will be in you.

🙏 Prayer

❓Question 35: Since we are redeemed by grace alone, through faith alone, where does this faith come from?

All the gifts we receive from Christ we receive through the Holy Spirit, including faith itself.

📖 Scripture: Titus 3:4-6

But when the goodness and loving kindness of God our Savior appeared, he saved us, not because of works done by us in righteousness, but according to his own mercy, by the washing of regeneration and renewal of the Holy Spirit, whom he poured out on us richly through Jesus Christ our Savior.

🙏 Prayer

Holy Spirit, you sought us when we could not seek you because we were dead in our trespasses and sins. You are the giver of our faith; none of us would believe apart from your regenerating grace, by which you make hearts of stone into hearts of flesh. ❓Question 34: Since we are redeemed by grace alone, through Christ alone, must we still do good works and obey God’s Word?

Yes, because Christ, having redeemed us by his blood, also renews us by his Spirit; so that our lives may show love and gratitude to God; so that we may be assured of our faith by the fruits; and so that by our godly behavior others may be won to Christ.

📖 Scripture: 1 Peter 2:9–12

But you are a chosen race, a royal priesthood, a holy nation, a people for his own possession, that you may proclaim the excellencies of him who called you out of darkness into his marvelous light. Once you were not a people, but now you are God’s people; once you had not received mercy, but now you have received mercy. Beloved, I urge you as sojourners and exiles to abstain from the passions of the flesh, which wage war against your soul. Keep your conduct among the Gentiles honorable, so that when they speak against you as evildoers, they may see your good deeds and glorify God on the day of visitation.

🙏 Prayer

Heavenly Father, you have saved us from sin. Let us not continue in it as if we were still enslaved to it. You have given us commands that are the path of life. Let us treasure those commands. May all who know us see our good works and glorify you because of them. Amen.

❓Question 33: Should those who have faith in Christ seek their salvation through their own works, or anywhere else?

No, they should not, as everything necessary to salvation is found in Christ. To seek salvation through good works is a denial that Christ is the only Redeemer and Savior.

📖 Scripture: Galatians 2:16

Yet we know that a person is not justified by works of the law but through faith in Jesus Christ, so we also have believed in Christ Jesus, in order to be justified by faith in Christ and not by works of the law, because by works of the law no one will be justified.

🙏 Prayer

One and Only God, keep us from trusting in good works or living in such a way that we imply they are the grounds of our salvation. Let us glorify your grace by leaning our whole weight upon it, staking our lives on the promise that you are the beginning and the end of our salvation. Amen.

❓Question 32: What do justification and sanctification mean?

Justification means our declared righteousness before God, made possible by Christ’s death and resurrection for us. Sanctification means our gradual, growing righteousness, made possible by the Spirit’s work in us.

📖 Scripture: 1 Peter 1:1–2

To those who are elect exiles . . . according to the foreknowledge of God the Father, in the sanctification of the Spirit, for obedience to Jesus Christ and for sprinkling with his blood: May grace and peace be multiplied to you.

🙏 Prayer

❓Question 31: What do we believe by true faith?

Everything taught to us in the gospel. The Apostles’ Creed expresses what we believe in these words: We believe in God the Father Almighty, Maker of heaven and earth; and in Jesus Christ his only Son our Lord, who was conceived by the Holy Spirit, born of the virgin Mary, suffered under Pontius Pilate, was crucified, died, and was buried. He descended into hell. The third day he rose again from the dead. He ascended into heaven, and is seated at the right hand of God the Father Almighty; from there he will come to judge the living and the dead. We believe in the Holy Spirit, the holy catholic church, the communion of saints, the forgiveness of sins, the resurrection of the body, and the life everlasting.

📖 Scripture: Jude 3

I found it necessary to write appealing to you to contend for the faith that was once for all delivered to the saints.

🙏 Prayer

Maker of Heaven and Earth, make the startling claims of our faith come alive to us. Let us not divorce theological truth from the history of your salvation, which occurred in time and space. Let us not waver in unbelief, but rest our lives upon the truth that you raise the dead. Amen.
